And so the deal is finally done: Microsoft and Yahoo early this morning announced a 10-year deal that provides a united front against search giant Google. As we wrote last night, the dealessentially turns over Yahoo’s search service to Microsoft and its newly launched Bing search engine, while Yahoo will be responsible for all search ad sales, using Microsoft’s ad sales technology.

Although Yahoo estimates the deal will mean $500 million a year in operating income, $200 million in savings on capital spending, and $275 million in extra operating cash flow, investors don’t appear too happy. The stock is down nearly 10% in early trading. They may be reacting to the lack of a large upfront payment that was rumored in earlier talks, as well as the uncertainty about how well the complex deal will be executed.

While the current recession has encouraged some who had left the profession to return, about 100,000 positions remain unfilled. President Barack Obama's goal of expanding health coverage to millions of the uninsured could also face additional hurdles if the supply of nurses can't meet the demand.

We have also greatly expanded the size of the Fed’s balance sheet through purchases of longer-term securities and through targeted lending programs aimed at restarting the flow of credit.

Google managed to beat expectations for its second-quarter results. Here’s the release, but on first glance, it looks like Google met expectations on revenues but beat handily on profits. All in all, it looks like Google’s business held up, and it managed to keep cutting costs to boost profits. That’s not bad for a media company in this economy.

But not enough to buy Google’s stock, which is already up more than 35% so far this year.

Lesia Liss, a registered nurse and now a state representative in the Michigan legislature, shares how she did it.

Lesia Liss never thought of going into politics. She worked in health care for 23 years, but after spending 13 years as a registered nurse in the emergency rooms of the Henry Ford Medical Center in Warren, Mich., she had a change of heart.

The US aluminium-maker Alcoa has reported a third consecutive quarter of losses, although they were not as bad as had been expected.

It made a net loss of $454m (£283m) between April and June.

That followed a net loss of $497m in the previous three months and a net profit of $546m in the second quarter of 2008.

Alcoa was the first of the companies in the Dow Jones industrial average to report second quarter earnings.

The economic downturn has hit Alcoa because with most of its customers come from hard-hit sectors such as car manufacturing, aerospace and construction.

It has responded to falling demand for aluminium by cutting 13,500 jobs, reducing its dividend and raising $1.3bn to help it get through the recession.

Japanese diplomat Yukiya Amano has been elected the next director-general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), diplomats say.

日本の外交官天野氏がIAEAの時期トップに選ばれたと外交筋は発表した。

Mr Amano won the required two-thirds majority from the IAEA governing board, defeating his South African rival, Abdul Samad Minty, by 23 votes to 11.

天野しは、IAEAの統治会議で必要とされる2/3以上の賛同を得て、南アフリカのアブドル・サマド・ミンティーを23対11で下した。

The present head, Mohamed ElBaradei, is scheduled to end his term in November.

現在のトップ、モハマド・エルバラディーは11月に任期満了となる予定。

A previous round of voting by the UN nuclear agency's 35-nation board in March was indecisive.

国連核事務局の35カ国による前回3月の投票では決着がついていなかった。

Mr Amano had the support of many industrialised countries while Mr Minty was favoured by most developing nations.

The vote reflected that split, with Mr Amano scraping through to victory by the bare minimum margin, without the support of developing states. There was also one abstention.

投票結果は分裂を反映して、天野氏は発展途上国の支持を受けられず、最小差での勝利となった。また、不参加も一票あった。

NEW DELHI: With the full Budget to be presented on Monday, the bond market is awaiting clarity on the quantum of upward revision in the borrowing targets.

ニューデリー：月曜日に公表される予算について、債券市場は発行額の上方修正の数量が明らかになることを待っている。

According to a senior official at the Reserve Bank of India, who requested anonymity, finance ministry is working on the size of upward revision and depending on size of the revision the borrowings calendar will be reviewed. The upward revision is expected to be about Rs 40,000 crore and if the borrowings announced are higher, “alternate means” of raising debt will be looked at, he added.

インド準備銀行の匿名の上席管理者によると、財務省は発行金額の上方修正を検討しており、金額によっては発行予定の見直しを行うという。上方修正はRs 40Kクロールに上る予定で、もし発行額がより多額であれば、他の借入手段も検討されるという。

The borrowing calendar gives the schedule of government bond auctions and the mix of securities on auction. The government would have raised Rs 1,62,000 crore in current fiscal, Rs 15,000 crore higher than the original projection.

借入予定によれば、政府発行債権の入札と証券の入札が予定されている。政府はRs 162Kクロール今年度に調達しており、当初予算を Rs 15K クロール以上超過している。

"The consequences, I think, will unfold over time in Iran," answered Mr. Axelrod.
